Causative Verbs

The english verbs let, make, have, get, and help are called causative verb because they cause something  else to happen. Here are some specific examples of how causative verbs work in english sentences.

How to use causative verbs

1. LET = Permit something to happen

formulas: let + person/thing + verb (base form)

Examples:
Our boss doesn't let us eat lunch at our desk; we have to eat in the cafetaria.
i don't let my kids watch violent movies.


2. MAKE = force or require someone to take an action

formulas: make + person + verb (base orm)

Examples:
After Billy broke the neighbor's window, his parents made him pay for it.
The teacher mad eall the student rewrite their papers, because the first drafts were not acceptable.

3. HAVE = give someone else the responsibility to do something

formulas: Have + person + verb (base form)

Examples:
I'll have my assistant call you to reschedule the appoinment.

formulas: Have + thing + past participle of verb

Examples:
I'm going to get my hair cut tomorrow.

4. GET = convunce/encourage someone to do something

formulas: Get + person + to + verb

Examples:
How can we get all the employees to arrive on time?
My husband hates housework; i can never get him to wash the dishes!

5. HELP = assist someone in doing something

formulas: Help + person + verb (base form)

Example:
He helped me carry the boxes

formulas: Help + person + to + verb

Examples:
Reading before bed helps me to relaxe
